Discoveries of devices that appeared to be pipe bombs forced evacuations in Carson and Long Beach on Thursday.

The South Bay Pavilion in Carson was evacuated for several hours after one device was found in a restroom.

A Sheriff’s Department bomb squad detonated the device at a nearby field, said Sgt. Ron Spear. He said that tests will be performed to determine if it contained explosives.

A janitor discovered the device about 2:50 p.m. when he was cleaning the restroom, Spear said. The shopping center, at Del Amo and Avalon boulevards, was evacuated along with nearby businesses.

Earlier Thursday, about 150 patients and employees were evacuated from the Long Beach Veterans Administration Hospital. Two objects that appeared to be pipe bombs were discovered, but a Sheriff’s Department bomb squad determined that the devices did not contain explosives, said Cpl. Josef Levy of the Long Beach Police Department.
