PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Chandler Wants a Place to Start

Share

Quarterback Chris Chandler, who Sunday will work as backup to Chris Miller, said he will be looking for the opportunity to be a starter when he decides where he will be playing football next season.

Chandler signed a one-year, $600,000 contract with the Rams with the understanding he was No. 2 to Miller, who received a three-year, $9-million deal. Injuries, however, have forced the Rams to start the quarterback who has been the healthiest each week.

In four starts, Chandler has compiled a 2-2 mark, while completing 62.9% of his passes with five touchdowns and two interceptions. Miller, who is 2-6 in a starting role, has completed 51.9% of his passes with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

The Rams’ front office has made no move to open negotiations on an extended contract or new deal for Chandler, who becomes a free agent at season’s end, because it is waiting for Coach Chuck Knox & Co. to determine what is happening at the quarterback position as it relates to next season.

“Being free definitely opens other doors for you,” Chandler said. “It will be interesting, but we still have four more weeks.

“Ultimately you’d like to know you are the No. 1 guy, but at the very worst you’d like to compete for the starting job. Anywhere you go, be it here or somewhere else, that’s something I’m going to want.”
