Three Orange County college students will receive scholarships ranging from $50 to $200 from a nonprofit group seeking to promote higher education.
Winners of the Art Davis Scholarships, sponsored by the Better Advantages for Students and Society, a Corona del Mar nonprofit group, will receive the awards at a ceremony from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Holiday Inn, 17941 Karman Ave., Irvine.
The winners are Cyndi O’Brien, a music student at Orange Coast College; Stacy Holland, who is working on a master’s degree in psychology at Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Corey Schribner, a music student at Fullerton College.
The scholarships are presented in the name of Art Davis, a music teacher at Orange Coast College for the past seven years. He helped found BASS more than a year ago to foster interest in education and encourage college students to complete their studies.
Davis said that the idea for a scholarship was started by his students four years ago, who wanted to present him with a birthday gift. He said the scholars are selected by a three-member panel, which includes himself, based on interviews and a 500-word essay about their goals.
Applications forms are available at colleges and universities in Southern California, Davis said.
Tickets for Sunday’s awards ceremony are $25 each, which includes lunch and entertainment.
