Oleg Tverdovsky, the Mighty Ducks’ second pick overall at the NHL draft in June, has received medical clearance from team and will play Canadian junior hockey with the Brandon Wheat Kings starting next week.
Tverdovsky, 18, missed the exhibition season because of a groin injury, and General Manager Jack Ferreira assigned him to Brandon of the Western Hockey League because he is eager for the young defenseman to play as the NHL lockout drags on. Tverdovsky would rejoin the Ducks should the labor dispute be resolved.
Tverdovsky also is likely to play for Russia in the World Junior Championships Dec. 26-Jan. 4 at Red Deer, Canada.
