Orange County Almanac

Think of an old-fashioned theater organ and you think of the once-grand downtown movie palaces of a half a century ago.

Fullerton’s modest Plummer Auditorium probably doesn’t come to mind. But this auditorium--owned by the Fullerton Joint Union High School District--is home to a mighty Wurlitzer organ.

Built in the 1930s, the instrument is probably the largest theater organ on public display in Southern California, said Bob Trousdale, owner of the Trousdale Organ Company.

The 70-year-old Santa Ana resident renovated the organ’s electronic system in 1993, and is now leading a volunteer effort to further enhance this “king of instruments,” as theater organs are affectionately called.
