A 24-year-old Upland man who apparently shot and wounded another man outside a bar early Monday morning was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies after he began firing at them, authorities said.

The man, whose identity was not released because his relatives had not been notified, died outside the Fantasia nightclub at 17500 Castleton St. at 1:30 a.m., sheriff’s spokeswoman Britta Tubbs said.

The wounded man, Reginald Parker, 21, of Pomona, was in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his buttocks, Tubbs said. Several disturbances had been reported that night at the club and the management had agreed to shut down an hour early at 1 a.m. to prevent other problems, Tubbs said.

Deputies were helping to escort about 300 patrons outside when a fistfight broke out in front of the club, Tubbs said.

While breaking up the fight, deputies heard gunfire from the parking lot. As they began searching for the source, one deputy saw a man armed with a semiautomatic handgun shoot another man lying on the ground, Tubbs said.

The man then turned toward the deputies, pointed his gun at them and began shooting, Tubbs said. Four deputies returned fire with 9-millimeter handguns, striking the man several times in the upper torso.
