Two police officers seriously wounded a man in a shootout early Saturday after an 18-mile car chase, authorities said.

The man, identified as Tayo Valen Bond, 28, whose address was not available, was in satisfactory condition later Saturday in the jail ward of Western Medical Center Hospital-Anaheim, a spokeswoman said.

The officers involved in the shooting were not injured.

A Westminster officer spotted Bond driving erratically near Garden Grove Boulevard and the Garden Grove Freeway in Westminster about 1:10 a.m. Saturday, police said. When Bond refused to pull over, two officers--one from Westminster and another from the Fullerton Police Department--pursued him, said Fullerton Police Sgt. Danny Becerra.

About 15 minutes later, the man lost control of his black sports car, which spun out, then came to a stop in the 3700 block of West Carol Drive in Fullerton, police said. Bond then reportedly abandoned his car and fled on foot, pursued by the officers.

“It was about a block later when he turned around and fired at the two officers,” Becerra said. “Then the officers returned fire.”

Bond suffered gunshot wounds in the lower torso and right hand and collapsed on the ground, Becerra said. He was being held Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and evading arrest.
