Tony Ingegneri, who garnered the third-highest vote among 12 candidates for City Council in the Nov. 8 election, was appointed this week to the council.

Ingegneri, 36, a businessman, will finish the remaining two years of Bruce A. Broadwater’s term. Broadwater was elected mayor Nov. 8 and will serve for two years.

Broadwater, Ingegneri and returning Councilmen Mark Leyes and Robert F. Dinsen were sworn in Tuesday.

Leyes was appointed to the largely ceremonial post of mayor pro tem. It will be his second term on the council. It is Dinsen’s fourth.

Dinsen, 77, was appointed to the council in 1980 and won in 1982, 1986 and 1990.

Ho Chung, who unsuccessfully ran for mayor against Broadwater and three other candidates Nov. 8, retains his seat on the five-member council.

Council members decided to appoint Ingegneri instead of holding a special election, which could cost as much as $75,000.

An advisory vote four years ago allows the council to pick the candidate with the next-highest number of votes after the winners to fill a vacancy.

Ingegneri received 7,178 votes, behind Leyes (10,647) and Dinsen (8,656).
