His official retirement from city government began just last week, but former Mayor Alex Fiore is already getting a new role in Thousand Oaks politics.

Councilwoman Judy Lazar said she plans to appoint Fiore to an open seat on the Performing Arts Center Board of Governors during tonight’s City Council meeting.

The Board of Governors oversees programming, scheduling and fund-raising for the Civic Arts Plaza auditorium.

Fiore and one other person applied for a seat on the board left vacant by Larry Sparrow, who moved from the area in November. Lazar said she chose Fiore on the basis of his extensive financial and government experience.

“I applied for it, so I’m anxious to be on it,” Fiore said. “I made commitments to the city to run that theater with no drain on the city’s general fund, and that’s what I intend to do.”

Lazar also said she plans to ask the council to confer upon Fiore the honorary title of “mayor emeritus” during tonight’s meeting.
