NEWPORT BEACH: Reaching Out to Battered Women

Who: Larry Webb, president of Greystone Homes Inc. of Newport Beach.

Contribution: The Volunteer Center of Orange County has given Webb the Spirit of Volunteerism award for service to Interval House crisis centers, a program for battered women and their children. Webb, a Newport Beach resident and an Interval House board member, was honored for leading the construction of a shelter for battered women in 1993 and the renovation of another facility.

HUNTINGTON BEACH: Helping Disabled Ride High in Saddle

Who: Real estate development company Huntington SeaCliff Corp.

Contribution: Has offered to help build a new equestrian arena within Huntington Central Park for the nonprofit Therapeutic Riding Center. The center offers a horseback riding program for physically, mentally and emotionally disabled people. Jim Whitehead, a board member, said the donation is valued at about $8,000.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO: Serving as Eyes and Ears for City Services

Who: Wilbur Wright, Phyllis Hess and Soc Saccoman.

Contribution: They were honored by the city for their work with the Associated Senior Action Program, also known as A.S.A.P. Volunteers in the program help serve as eyes and ears for the city and its police services department. Wright was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award for his work in the city’s traffic division, collecting data on 75 miles of streets. Hess and Saccoman received Distinguished Service awards.

ORANGE: Doing Their Part for Beautification

Who: The Crest De Ville Homeowners Assn.

Contribution: Provided money for landscape improvements on the public right of way at Loma Street and Serrano Avenue. Association members watched the city postpone the promised aesthetic improvements for several years, and then the association gave $1,245 to make them happen.

COUNTYWIDE: Working Together for Festive Holidays

The Orange County Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is seeking volunteers for holiday season activities including Red Kettle bell-ringing, serving as a “chaperon shopper” for needy children, and for food distribution. Also, food and gifts. Information: (714) 832-7100.
