CRENSHAW : ‘Mulch Madness’ to Begin Beautification of Exposition Blvd.

Share

The Los Angeles Conservation Corps is joining forces with several community groups and businesses to spread holiday cheer through the promise of trees--though not the traditional Scotch pines that grace countless corner lots this time of year.

The corps is encouraging the public to come out Saturday for “Mulch Madness” to help workers begin beautification of a stretch of Exposition Boulevard by laying down mulch as a precursor to tree plantings.

Mulch consists of environmentally friendly wood chips that eventually decompose into the soil, providing a foundation for later plantings. The chips will be laid along Exposition from Crenshaw Boulevard to La Brea Avenue, sprucing up an eyesore of weeds, gravel and litter.

The mulching will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning at Crenshaw and winding up at Farmdale Avenue near Dorsey High.

The event will also provide corps members, many of them young men from local neighborhoods, the opportunity to come together for a large-scale project.

“We want to bring our corps members from both sites together,” said Martin Ludlow, who directs the Main Street conservation corps site. “The Exposition Boulevard project gives the (Conservation Corps) the chance to work together on a larger scale and impact the Los Angeles community.”

Corps members from the Main Street and Hammel Avenue sites will work with volunteers from a variety of agencies.
