Orange County Almanac

The amount of trash entering Orange County landfills has steadily declined since 1989, according to the county’s Integrated Waste Management Department. The decline occurred because most cities have adopted successful recycling programs.

In addition, residents and businesses are putting out less trash because they were making fewer purchases due to the recession, officials said. It’s only recently that the economy has shown signs of improving.

In 1993-94, the amount of trash taken to the county’s four landfills was 1.3 million tons less than in 1988-89. This should be good news to cities that are anxious to comply with a state law that requires a 25% reduction in the volume of trash dumped in landfills by 1995.
