Lockheed Corp. Wins $1.3-Billion British Contract: The British government contract is for 25 military transport aircraft, overcoming opposition that had split Britain’s Cabinet. Minister of Defense Malcolm Rifkind announced the award to Lockheed, which will deliver a new version of the popular Hercules transport jet it began making in 1954. Rifkind also said Britain was ready to rejoin the Future Large Aircraft project, which will develop a European rival to the Hercules early next century. Trade Minister Michael Heseltine was reportedly angry with plans to buy the Hercules rather than refurbishing existing transport aircraft.
