City Hall Lights

Re “Let There Be Song, Too,” photo, Dec. 8: For the past three years Los Angeles City Hall has become a focal point for ushering in the holiday season with a display of lights that adorn the entire exterior of the historic structure.

We believe Los Angeles residents should be aware that these lights were purchased and are installed annually at no cost to the taxpayer. The lighting project is a gift to Project Restore for the city by the 6,000 members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 11, and the 400 contractors represented by the L.A. County chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Assn.

This effort is truly a breakthrough in labor-management relations. Whereas labor-management disputes typically receive widespread attention, it should also be recognized that in the unionized electrical construction industry, labor-management cooperation has historically been practiced with great success. The City Hall lighting is just one example of what cooperation between organized labor and management can achieve.
