Leonard Agee Shelton; Former City Attorney for Pomona, Covina

Leonard Agee Shelton, 83, former city attorney for Pomona, Covina and other San Gabriel Valley cities. A native of Ardmore, Okla., Shelton moved to California as a child and was educated at Pomona College and Boalt Hall School of Law. He began his career in Santa Monica. He served as a supply officer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, during World War II, earning the Legion of Merit. After the war, Shelton founded the Pomona-based law firm of Allard, Shelton & O’Connor, where he practiced until his retirement last year. Among his clients, in addition to Pomona and Covina, were the cities of Claremont, La Verne and Glendora. He served on the Pomona College Board of Trustees from 1956 until 1981, and was the board’s general counsel and secretary from 1981 until 1991. A bird watcher and conservationist, Shelton served on the national boards of the Audubon Society and the International Crane Foundation and worked to preserve wetlands and other natural habitats. On Dec. 7 in Claremont.
