Hughes Chief to Join Times Mirror Board: C. Michael Armstrong will join the board of Times Mirror Co. after completion of the Los Angeles-based media company’s previously announced merger of its cable TV unit with Cox Communications, Times Mirror said. The merger is expected to be completed shortly after a special shareholders meeting Jan. 19. Armstrong, 56, is chairman and chief executive of GM Hughes Electronics Corp. and its Hughes Aircraft Co. unit. He joined GM Hughes Electronics in 1992 during a diversification into non-military markets. Before joining Hughes, Armstrong was chairman of IBM World Trade Corp., where he was responsible for IBM operations outside the United States. Times Mirror is parent of the Los Angeles Times.
