WILMINGTON : Panel OKs Scaled-Back Banning’s Landing Plan
If the Wilmington Community Advisory Committee agrees, a scaled-back version of the Banning’s Landing project, which would include a 10,000-square-foot building and a promenade, will be built for $2.5 million.
The Harbor Commission approved the project during a Dec. 14 meeting, subject to a vote by the advisory committee. The committee had asked for a historical site with a 20,000-square-foot building to be used for community meetings, functions and displays showcasing port and community activities. It was expected to cost $5 million to $10 million.
Some committee members were disappointed about the changes to the project.
“We wanted the whole enchilada,” said Gertrude Schwab, an advisory committee member and former harbor commissioner.
Creating a historical site on the waterfront has been a goal for residents for six years.
Despite the changes made to the project, Schwab said she is optimistic about the future of the site on 10 acres at the end of Avalon Boulevard.
The advisory committee is scheduled to vote on the plan Jan. 10.
