Canoga Park Man Accidentally Shot
A Canoga Park man was in critical condition Wednesday after a friend showing off a new handgun accidentally shot him in the head, Los Angeles police said.
Jaime Pina, 22, of Canoga Park was being sought by police in connection with the shooting, Detective Rick Swanston said. Swanston said Pina ran away after Bernardo Martinez, 22, was shot once in the head.
Martinez and another friend went to visit Pina at his home in the 7300 block of Milwood Avenue about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, Swanston said. “They’re sitting there on the couch when Jaime Pina brings out his new gun,” Swanston said. “When showing it to (Martinez), a round discharges” and hits Martinez in the head.
“Jaime feels bad about it for a couple of seconds, then takes up the gun and runs,” Swanston said. “Running isn’t good, but whether it’s a crime we’re going to look at.”
Martinez was being treated at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, police said.
