Trimedyne Inc.: The Irvine medical laser company said it has settled a patent infringement lawsuit filed against it by Coherent Inc.

Trimedyne said that, under the agreement, Coherent dropped its lawsuit, and Trimedyne dropped an unfair competition lawsuit against Coherent. Trimedyne said it also received a license in orthopedics at a minimal royalty rate. The lawsuit had alleged that Trimedyne infringed on three separate Coherent patents.

In a separate announcement, Trimedyne said it is in discussions with orthopedic companies for a possible marketing alliance for its orthopedic laser and fiber optic delivery systems.
