Espresso Machine Maker Responds to Injuries: A leading espresso machine maker will offer corrected operating instructions after reports of injuries caused by shattered carafes, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced this week. The agency said Krups North America will voluntarily offer stickers and corrected operating instructions for its 1.47 million espresso-cappuccino machines, model No. 963, after receiving 57 reports of shatterings, including 15 injuries. The problem is linked to the position of the filter holder for the machine. If it is set in the wrong position, steam pressure may build up with enough force to cause the holder to fly out of the machine, possibly shattering the glass carafe. Consumers should rotate the filter holder to the “max” position. Call (800) 526-5377 to receive revised operating instructions and a sticker to put over the “min-max” position.
