Heartfelt Advice on ‘Killer Dogs’

Share

I read your article on “killer dogs” in Rosamond roaming the countryside killing sheep and goats.

As a kid growing up in Iowa in the early ‘30s, I had firsthand knowledge about this revolting situation. Our small dairy farm was located on the edge of a small town of 4,000 souls, and dog packs would form in town and my dog would join them as they went by our house on their way to sheep farms north of us. We would have absolutely no idea that our sweet lovable dog would join in a vicious group of canines bent on killing animals. It would be an unbelievable shock to us when a farmer would tell us that he had seen our pet in the pack.

I lost several dogs to the shotgun when my dad received the distressing information. Never did any of our dogs show any sign of being a killer, but I guess when they joined the pack their instincts took over.

My suggestion to Rosamond is to concentrate on enforcing the leash law and plead with the residents to lock up their dogs at night, as dog packs never form during the daylight hours.
