CASTAIC — An Ontario woman speeding to pass cars on the Golden State Freeway was killed Thursday when she smashed into a rocky hillside and was thrown from her car, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Barbara Morgan, 30, was driving north on the freeway at about 8:40 a.m. and attempting to pass cars at 75 m.p.h. when she lost control of her car and hit an embankment near the Lake Hughes Road exit, Officer Rick Miller said.
The woman’s car overturned several times and came to rest upside-down. The woman was found a short distance away, Miller said.
A 2-year-old boy, Robert Hawkins of Rancho Cucamonga, was a passenger in Morgan’s car and received moderate injuries, Miller said.
CHP investigators said the relationship between Morgan and Hawkins was unclear.
Both were airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, where Morgan was pronounced dead an hour after the accident. The child was treated for his injuries and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
