FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Kiwanis Treats for Orangewood Children

Share

Acting on its motto of “children first,” the Fountain Valley Kiwanis Club brightened the holiday season this week for 27 youngsters from the Orangewood Children’s Home.

The 24-member community service group treated the children, ages 4 to 6, to lunch and a visit with Santa Claus. Each child also received a gift: a Barbie doll or Power Ranger figure.

“It’s really a special day for them,” said Chris Fowler, Kiwanis president. Fowler added that the event also proved rewarding for club members--especially when they saw the shine in the children’s eyes as they clutched their gifts.

The Orange facility is for children who are in protective custody. Fowler said club members wanted to spread Christmas cheer to the children because they “aren’t going to have a special Christmas. They’re away from their families. For us, we felt that for a few hours at least, we can make it more special.”

Fowler said the outpouring of gifts was so great that there were 60 extra toys, which will be donated to the Fairview Developmental Center in Costa Mesa.
