REDONDO BEACH : City Clerk Finds Flaws in Hill Recall Effort

Share

An effort to recall Councilman Greg Hill has hit a roadblock after recall proponents failed to follow proper procedures, officials said.

Twenty residents filed an intent to recall Hill last month, claiming the councilman committed a host of egregious acts. Among them was a charge that Hill hired a convicted child molester as his campaign manager.

But City Clerk John L. Oliver said in a letter to a key recall proponent that the residents should begin the campaign again because they failed to follow proper procedures.

Oliver said recall proponents failed to publish a notice of the recall campaign in a newspaper, and he said several of the complaints against Hill are “untrue and may be challenged.”

Oliver could not be reached for comment.

Recall proponent Marvin (Bud) Moran, in a letter to Oliver, said he believes Oliver is trying to protect Hill from the recall. Moran said Tuesday he was unsure whether recall proponents would try again to recall the councilman.

Hill, who was elected in 1993 to represent the city’s marina area, has defended his work on the council. He said he had no idea when he hired his campaign manager that the man was a convicted child molester and said the individual no longer works for him. Hill’s term expires in 1997.
