MANHATTAN BEACH : Slain Officer Mourned in Candlelight Vigil

Share

A stream of flickering candle lights and words of remembrance marked the one-year anniversary of the slaying of Manhattan Beach Police Officer Martin Ganz, who was shot during a traffic stop outside a local bank.

Dozens of residents, police officers, friends and family members of Ganz held candles as they walked Tuesday evening through city streets to the spot where Ganz was shot. There, officers remembered Ganz and mourned the slain officer.

“We think about it every day and we will for the rest of our lives,” Manhattan Beach Officer John Loy said. “It’s never going to end.”

Ganz was a popular member of the force. The 29-year-old was about to be married when he was shot during a routine traffic stop as his 13-year-old nephew looked on. Months went by as authorities searched for Ganz’s killer before a suspect was named in August.

Roger Hoan Brady, jailed in Oregon in the slaying of a 55-year-old woman during a grocery store robbery, is also suspected of shooting Ganz. Brady faces murder charges in Ganz’s slaying.

At the end of the candlelight vigil, the candle bearers were asked to extinguish the candles in Ganz’s remembrance.
