Indescribable. That’s the word for the decor of Two West Coffee Co., a family-run coffee house scheduled to open Tuesday in Ventura (at 2 W. Main St.)

From the outside, the establishment looks intriguing enough--it’s in a 91-year-old brick building. On the inside, there’s more than the eye can take in at one glance. “A friend of mine (Justin Bailey) is a set designer in L.A. I gave him complete creative license,” said co-owner Dave Paglia. “He went absolutely berserk. It looks like something out of Roger Rabbit.”

One side of the place is set up in bizarre living-room fashion for lounging, chatting, thinking and playing pool, with a wall set aside for rotating art exhibits. The other side has the coffee bar, food, more seating and a stage for music, poetry readings and maybe even avant-garde performance art. Much of the furniture and a portion of the artwork (especially on the “Wall of Shame”) was collected from garage sales, thrift stores and even a trash can or two, said Paglia. The circus scene above the coffee bar, and paintings of the poodle boy and gorilla girl, help set the mood.

As for the edibles, Two West will be open for breakfast from 6:30 a.m., with muffins, scones and baguettes prepared by Santa Barbara baker Per. For lunch, the menu will include sandwiches, pasta salads and soups. Dinner for now is frozen pizza.

As for the coffee, expect to find about six blends available daily. “People say, ‘Oh, another coffee house.’ But it isn’t just another coffee house,” said Paglia. “It’s not like you’re even in Ventura.”

During the past couple of weeks, we’ve been letting you know of some of the New Year’s feasts planned for Ventura County. In case you’re still looking for just the right one, here’s another option.

Chef Gael Lecolley of Wheeler Hot Springs, in Ojai, will be cooking up a shindig of his own. The menu begins with a salad with vegetable garnish and a truffle sherry vinaigrette, followed by an appetizer choice of Scottish smoked salmon with mascarpone cheese, fresh chives and orange comfit; or the forest mushroom polenta , with porcini, shitake and chanterelle mushrooms.

After a cleansing lime sorbet comes the entree--a choice of three medallions of beef with foie gras , celery-root puree and a morel sauce; filet of sturgeon served in an herb crust with lobster bisque sauce and caviar; or a grilled rack of lamb with an apple-brandy sauce.

Cost is $85 per person, which includes entertainment by the Chris Cain Band.
