Group Backs Best Use of Wetlands

Debbie Cook’s letter (Dec. 18) characterized the issue at Bolsa Chica succinctly, reducing it to the simplest, most accurate assessment. Development of some part of the Bolsa Chica area, with some number of homes, seems probable, unless a source with sufficient funds or other resources is identified to obtain the entire property for public ownership.

The Amigos de Bolsa Chica are supportive of efforts to identify such a source. However, until a source is identified, and a viable and acceptable “land transfer” offer is made to the landowners, the Amigos believe it is imperative that community efforts continue to focus on active and objective participation in the planning and permitting process that is in progress.

The Amigos will continue to direct our efforts toward ensuring that the wetlands and open-space protections guaranteed in our 1989 agreement become a reality. We will also promote the fullest participation in the process by the city of Huntington Beach, its citizens and the citizens of Orange County in resolving the issues surrounding the balance of the property at Bolsa Chica.
