LANCASTER — An Antelope Valley sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a man who had taken his girlfriend hostage Tuesday night, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
The Lancaster man, Carl Hanible, 25, was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital and is expected to survive, said Sgt. Larry Lincoln of the Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities would not identify the deputy, who shot Hanible after answering a domestic violence call.
The 6:18 p.m. shooting occurred on the 2000 block of Newgrove Street after a neighbor reported a woman crying for help, said Sgt. Steve Nelson of the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Station. Deputies were called to the scene twice.
The suspect was not arrested the first time, Nelson said.
When deputies were called back less than an hour later, they found the couple in the front yard of their home. Hanible was armed with a handgun and appeared to be holding the woman as a hostage, Nelson said. As deputies approached, authorities said, Hanible used the girlfriend as a shield and was shot by a deputy.
