SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : City Puts Off Vote on Shared Soccer Fields

Share

The City Council has postponed for a month a decision that would allow Dana Point soccer leagues to use playing fields planned here.

The Dana Point City Council had earmarked $110,000 toward the construction of three soccer fields, but a facility-use agreement between the two cities was put on hold Tuesday until Feb. 7, because of the county’s financial trouble and its possible effects on Dana Point’s budget.

The delay was recommended by San Juan Capistrano officials.

Bonnie Nicholl, Dana Point’s manager of recreation services, said Thursday that officials there have given no indication yet whether the expenditure for the fields will be scrapped.

The Dana Point City Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss its financial status in the wake of the county bond crisis.

“I do think we will find something out then,” Nicholl said.

The planned San Juan Capistrano sports complex will be on 18 acres near Marco F. Forster Middle School, at Camino del Avion and Del Obispo Street.

The $3.8-million complex will include a community center, soccer fields, a baseball field and softball field.

A $110,000 contribution from Dana Point would pay for about 35% of the cost to construct the soccer fields.
