A 2-year-old boy died a day after a bedroom dresser toppled onto him, crushing the toddler five minutes after his mother left the room to take a shower, authorities said Thursday.

Zachary Davis had been watching television Tuesday morning when his mother, Julia Davis, went into the next room to take a shower, Police Officer Michael Corcoran said.

After Davis left the room, Zachary tried to climb on top of a bedroom dresser, Corcoran said. The dresser fell on top of him, knocking him unconscious and causing internal injuries, he said.

Zachary was taken to Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where he was put on life support but never regained consciousness. Zachary died at the hospital at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Corcoran said.

“This is tremendously unfortunate,” he said.

Davis also has a 3-year-old boy and a 3-month-old infant, both of whom were in the house but were not injured, Corcoran said. Child abuse is not suspected, Corcoran said. Davis could not be reached for comment Thursday.
