The deadline for residents wishing to fill a vacancy on the City Council has been extended until Jan. 13.

The deadline to return applications was originally set for next Monday. But the City Council agreed this week to extend the application period to create more awareness among the public that a seventh seat on the council is open.

Applications may be picked up at the city clerk’s office, 2000 Main St. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and should have an understanding of the issues facing the city.

The council vacancy was created when Jim Silva was elected in November to the Orange County Board of Supervisors. The council on Tuesday accepted Silva’s resignation. Silva was sworn in Wednesday as a county supervisor.

In order to narrow the expected field of candidates, each council member will select up to three people to be interviewed.

The council will make its selection of candidates to be interviewed Jan. 17. Interviews, which will be open to the public, are scheduled for Jan. 20 and 21.

A special council meeting also has been scheduled Jan. 23 to make an appointment.

More information is available by calling the city clerk’s office at (714) 536-5227.
