With Female College Chancellors, 1=2

It was nice to read (“Number of Women in Top College Jobs Grows,” Jan. 3) that the number of women college administrators has grown, even though admittedly, “community colleges are the most likely campuses to be led by women,” and “four of five women” who are chancellors of colleges or universities in Orange County, are chancellors of community colleges instead of universities. Heck, it’s a start.

The thing that really troubles me, though, is that nobody breaks it down further than “women.” Is it just a coincidence that Vera Martinez is Hispanic and Christine Johnson is black?

Is this just a way the white male establishment is showing by the numbers that they are hiring women “and” minorities when what they are actually doing is hiring women minorities for these positions? That way they don’t have to hire white women, who are not apt to have reservations going eyeball to eyeball with the white males in charge. Also, they can avoid hiring black and Hispanic males, who may be less tractable than the “fair sex.”

As somebody said about Clinton’s selection of women for high posts, “Hey, how about the Cabinet’s looking more like the makeup of the general population!”
