County Fire Station 14 in Silverado Canyon has a proud but tragic history.

The station is staffed mostly with volunteers who live in the remote mountain community near the Cleveland National Forest. The volunteers must be ready to battle fires at any time.

In 1969, five residents seeking shelter died in the station when a mudslide caused by once-in-a-century rainstorms buried them.

The station was rebuilt nearby. Then, in 1993, a portion of the station was burned in a fire. But the community rallied together to have it restored once again.

They were even able to celebrate the station’s 50th anniversary last year.
