VENTURA : Events to Celebrate King’s Birthday

Music, dance, prayer and a march will be part of Ventura County’s ninth annual celebration this week honoring the birthday of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

The celebration, sponsored by the Martin Luther King Committee of Ventura County, will begin Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Ventura College Theater with an opening reception, followed by a performance by Lula Washington’s Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Theater.

On Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., local musicians will recognize the King holiday with a free performance of blues, jazz and gospel music at Ventura Harbor Village. Performances will be held during the same hours Jan. 15 and 16.

Culminating the celebrations will be a march on Jan. 16 from Oxnard Plaza Park at 5th and C streets to the Oxnard Community Center.

Former Assemblywoman Gwen Moore will be the keynote speaker during a program at the community center.

The program will also include speeches by Oxnard Mayor Manuel M. Lopez and former Miss California USA, Toay Foster.
