2-Day Event at College to Honor Martin Luther King Jr.

The Rev. Cecil Murray of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles will be a guest speaker for the South County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration ’95 on Monday.

The two-day event, which will offer other speakers as well as discussions and musical entertainment, will be capped with the appearance by Murray at Saddleback College’s McKinney Theater.

“It’s exciting to have somebody of his stature come down here on that day and speak to our community,” Saddleback College spokesman Kurt Hueg said.

Hueg said that the celebration of the civil rights leader’s life and message was organized by a committee of South County leaders.

The event will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church with a program by the Crossroads Choral Group. Opening remarks will be made by Mission Viejo Mayor Joseph D. Lowe.

The keynote speaker Sunday will be Sister Carmen Sarati of the Social Justice Center, Sisters of St. Joseph. A chicken dinner will be served by Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops after the program. The meal will cost $5.

The church is at 26001 Muirlands Blvd., Mission Viejo.

On Monday, a luncheon program is scheduled for noon at the Saddleback College Student Center. The guest speaker will be Lake Forest Councilwoman Kathryn McCullough.

At 2:30 p.m., a diversity forum in Room 210 of the college’s Business and General Studies Building will feature panelists Rusty Kennedy, executive director of the Orange County Human Relations Commission; Angela Oh, chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Korean Family Services, and Ned Doffoney, Saddleback College president.

Murray will speak during the evening program, which will start at 4:30 with a reception in the college’s McKinney Theater.
