COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Kansas Ends Missouri Streak at 16 Games

Scot Pollard and Sean Pearson each scored 22 points and third-ranked Kansas dominated inside in a 102-89 victory over No. 17 Missouri on Monday night at Columbia, Mo., ending the Tigers’ 16-game Big Eight winning streak.

Freshman Raef LaFrentz had 16 rebounds for Kansas as Missouri, which beat the Jayhawks twice last season en route to an unbeaten season in the conference, was outrebounded, 44-33.

Missouri (10-2, 1-1) also made only 16 of 29 free throws.

Paul O’Liney scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half and Marlo Finner had all 10 of his points after halftime as Missouri cut a 13-point halftime deficit to five points four times. But Finner, a 41% free-throw shooter entering the season, made only two of seven free throws.

Kansas (11-1, 1-0) made 15 of 18 free throws in the second half.

Kansas led at halftime, 47-34, and extended the lead to 17 points when Pearson scored on a drive with 18:31 to play.

No. 8 Syracuse 61, Villanova 60--Lawrence Moten’s first three-point basket of the game came with 6.6 seconds to play and gave the Orangemen the Big East victory at Syracuse, N.Y.

The victory was the 11th in a row for Syracuse (11-1, 4-0), which won despite a six-minute scoreless spell in the second half.

Villanova (8-5, 2-2) had a final chance to win, calling a timeout with 2.4 seconds to play. Jonathan Haynes inbounded the ball at half-court to Alvin Williams, who was whistled for traveling as he tried to catch the ball under pressure from the Syracuse defense.

Chuck Kornegay, making only his second start, led Villanova with 16 points, the final two on a dunk with 1:45 to play that gave the Wildcats a 58-57 lead.

Haynes made two of four free throws around a foul shot by Moten to make the score 60-58 with 21 seconds to play. Syracuse worked the ball around to Moten, whose 24-foot shot from the right side swished through the net.

Jimmy Moore scored 19 points to help Nevada (6-5, 2-1) to a 75-67 Big West Conference victory over UC Santa Barbara (7-3, 2-1) at Reno, Nev. . . . Keith Van Horn had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead Utah (11-3, 2-1) to a 78-66 Western Athletic Conference victory over Air Force (4-9, 0-4) at Air Force Academy, Colo. . . . Russell Larson scored 22 points to help Brigham Young (12-3, 3-0) to a 69-61 WAC victory over Fresno State (5-7, 0-4) at Fresno.

LaZelle Durden scored 33 points to help Cincinnati (10-5) to an 87-80 victory over Xavier (10-2) at Cincinnati. . . . Brian Lloyd made a school-record nine three-point baskets and scored a career-high 32 points to lead Brown (5-6) to a 95-68 victory over Lafayette (2-10) at Easton, Pa.

Nevada Las Vegas Coach Tim Grgurich was scheduled to undergo a series of tests after his hospitalization for apparent exhaustion. UNLV trainer Jerry Koloskie said Grgurich was scheduled to undergo the tests after meeting with a doctor Saturday and relaxing Sunday.
