Irvine police have taken note of recent statewide statistics showing that 20% of all traffic accidents are caused by unlicensed drivers or those driving with suspended licenses.

Irvine Sgt. Richard Bowman has obtained a list from the Department of Motor Vehicles of approximately 2,500 Irvine drivers who are either unlicensed or who have suspended licenses.

Bowman has distributed the list to officers who will be contacting the drivers in question to clear up outstanding arrest warrants and to encourage them not to drive.

“The overall effort is to make Irvine a safer place to drive,” said Police Chief Charles S. Brobeck.

Tours of the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve will begin every 10 to 15 minutes between 9 and 10:15 a.m., starting at Eastbluff and Backbay drives.

The two-hour tours cover about a mile of the upper bay, with stops for exhibits and explanations of the bay’s history.

In addition to ducks and assorted shorebirds, tour organizers say there is a chance to see some endangered species including peregrine falcons, brown pelicans, clapper rails and ospreys.
