Mauch to Join Boone in Kansas City

Kansas City Manager Bob Boone has hired former Angel manager Gene Mauch, 69, as the Royals’ bench coach. When Boone played for the Angels, Mauch was his manager. “He’s the brightest baseball mind I’ve ever been around,” Boone said.
Mauch retired as Angel manager during spring training in 1988. He is ninth on the managers’ career list for games won, but also managed longer than anyone in baseball history without winning a pennant.
His Angels won AL West titles in 1982 and ’86.
