THE PATH WE TRAVEL: Celebrations of Contemporary Native American Culture photographs by Walter Bigbee (Fulcrum: $18.95; 128 pp., paperback original). These statements by 15 artists document the installations and performances that led up to the inauguration of the George Gustave Haye Center in Manhattan last fall. Although the artists acknowledge the need to adapt old practices to new social realities, including a greater emphasis on the role of women, they stress the continuation of their ancestral traditions. An essay by Frank LaPena (Wintu-Nomtipom) summarizes the tone of the events and the book: “The elders taught us about the good from the past; as adults, we try to carry on the good by example and by creating new ways to guide our young in the present and in the future.”
