Countywide : Six Groups Awarded ‘Food for All’ Grants
Six community-based hunger programs in Orange County have received grants from Food for All, a nonprofit organization that raises money through donation cards at supermarket checkout stands.
The grants were given last week. Their amounts and local recipients are:
* $3,900 to the Anaheim Interfaith Shelter to support a transitional family shelter.
* $10,400 to Latino Health Access in Santa Ana to start a family gardening project and a food cooperative for low-income Latinos.
* $5,000 to Lutheran Social Services of Orange to purchase food and supplies for a daily hot meal program.
* $5,000 to the Orange-based Mental Health Assn. of Orange County to provide homeless and mentally ill people with meals, shelter and life skills programs.
* $5,000 to the Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter in Costa Mesa to purchase food for an emergency and transitional shelter program.
* $7,880 to the Thomas House Temporary Shelter in Fountain Valley to support a transitional shelter for homeless families.
Since its inception in 1985, Food for All has awarded more than $4.25 million in grants to Southern California agencies.
Among the supermarkets working with Food for All are Albertson’s, Alpha Beta, Boys/Viva Markets, Gelson’s/Mayfair Markets, Hughes Markets, Lucky Stores, Pavilions, Ralphs, Smith’s Food and Drug, and Stater Bros. Markets.
