Young America held off a challenge from Dennis Conner’s Stars & Stripes to win its third America’s Cup defender race.

Young America, skippered by Kevin Mahaney, crossed the finish line 18 seconds ahead of Stars & Stripes in the closest margin in four days of racing on defender and challenger courses.

On the Challenger course, two early races were abandoned for a lack of wind, but in the featured contest Team New Zealand beat oneAustralia by 1 minute 36 seconds.

Paul Robeson, the Rutgers’ All-American who became famous as a singer and movie star, will be posthumously inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in Larchmont, N.Y. Also among the inductees announced by the National Football Foundation were running back Jim Brown of Syracuse and coach Frank Kush of Arizona State.

John Sandusky, who spent 26 years as an assistant under Coach Don Shula, retired from the Miami Dolphins after 43 years in the NFL as a player and coach. . . . Mike Frier, the Seattle Seahawk tackle paralyzed from the waist down in a Dec. 1 car wreck, was transferred to a Seattle hospital for rehabilitation. . . . Floyd Peters, one of the NFL’s top defensive coordinators over the last 20 years, was fired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
