Nominees to Coastal Panel to Be Discussed
The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider nominating Ventura Councilwoman Rosa Lee Measures and Port Hueneme Mayor Toni Young as candidates for the regional representative slot on the California Coastal Commission.
Supervisor Maggie Kildee, who chairs the board, is asking the panel to support the two nominations and consider a third if brought forth before Tuesday. Moorpark Mayor Paul Lawrason has also expressed interest in the post.
Kildee said the board can submit up to three names for consideration by Gov. Pete Wilson. Wilson is accepting nominations to fill a vacancy left by former Port Hueneme Councilman Dorill Wright, who has held a seat on the 12-member Coastal Commission for 16 years.
The regional representative serves a two-year term and represents Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. The Coastal Commission is responsible for regulating development along the state’s 1,100-mile-long coastline.
Officials from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties will be able to nominate their own candidates.
Kildee said she has written a letter to Wilson on behalf of Measures, who has forwarded letters of support to Wilson from Supervisors John K. Flynn and Judy Mikels, Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) and former Rep. Robert J. Lagomarsino.
The governor will select a new regional representative in March, Wilson spokeswoman Julia Justus said.
