Serious crimes committed in Westminster are down 11% from last year, and 25% lower than four years ago, according to city officials, who credit the decline to an aggressive anti-gang program.

Serious crimes include homicides, rape, robbery, assault, burglaries and thefts. Gang-related crimes are down 49% since 1991, drunk-driving arrests are up 50% from last year and crimes at the Westminster Mall are down 52% from last year.

The city’s anti-gang program, which involves the district attorney’s office and the Orange County Probation Department, was recognized last year by a national organization of cities as a law enforcement model, officials said.
