Two men were arrested early Monday during an attempted robbery at a Ventura gas station at Kimball and Telephone roads, police said.

Cory Brandon Soper, 19, of Ventura and Steven Guy Nelson, 33, of Oxnard were arrested as they fled the Blankenship Shell Station about 2 a.m., authorities said.

According to police, Nelson parked his car just north of the gas station while Soper, wearing a bandanna over his face, approached the only attendant at the station.

Soper allegedly pointed a semi-automatic pistol at the attendant and demanded money.

The victim foiled the robbery by slamming the office door before Soper could get in, police said.

While the attendant called police, the pair fled north on Kimball Road, police said.

A few minutes later, Ventura police arrested both suspects near Kimball Road and California 126.

Soper and Nelson were taken to Ventura County Jail.

Soper was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail and Nelson was being held without bail.
