LOS ANGELES : Bernson Calls for Law on Automatic Gas Shut-Offs
In the wake of the devastating fires that followed the earthquake in Kobe, Japan, City Councilman Hal Bernson proposed a law Tuesday requiring that every home and business in Los Angeles be equipped with valves that automatically shut off gas mains during an earthquake.
The proposal would expand a previously approved law championed by Bernson that requires property owners to install the valves on all new and renovated homes and businesses. That law takes effect July 1.
Bernson said he has asked that building and safety officials devise a plan that would gradually phase in the shut-off valve requirement.
He also suggested that the city may be able to use federal funds to implement a financial assistance plan for low-income residents who cannot afford the valves, which cost about $250 each plus installation.
