Burglary Suspect Now Charged With Murder

A man originally charged with burglary was also charged with murder Tuesday on the grounds that the shock of the burglary caused the victim to have a fatal heart attack, according to the Los Angeles district attorney’s office.

Alfonso Blackmon, 25, of Van Nuys was charged with residential burglary on Jan. 20. Investigators added the murder charge because the burglary victim, Janet Doering, 60, died of a heart attack when she heard him break in, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert A. Dver.

Investigators said Doering heard noises at her home on Ponce Avenue in Canoga Park on Nov. 12 and called 911. Blackmon left before police arrived, but Doering had already suffered the fatal heart attack, Dver said.

Blackmon was arrested Jan. 18 and arraigned on the burglary charge. He is in custody on $1 million bail and will be arraigned on the amended charge when he returns for his preliminary hearing Feb. 1 in San Fernando Municipal Court.
