UCLA to Get Twice as Much Kick Out of Sailer

Notre Dame High kicker Chris Sailer, a USA Today All-American, said Tuesday night he will sign a letter of intent to play football at UCLA. He will also play soccer for the Bruins.

The NCAA football signing period begins Feb. 1.

Sailer also visited California and Colorado State and canceled a trip to Stanford. He said he chose the Bruins because football Coach Terry Donahue and soccer Coach Sigi Schmid worked out an arrangement for Sailer to play the two sports, even though both are in the same season.

Sailer, 5 feet 10, 180 pounds, was the Southern Section Division III co-player of the year. His 22 field goals set a state single-season record and helped the Knights to the Division III title. He tied the state career field goal record with 33.

Track and Field

Jim Benkert, the boys’ and girls’ coach at Westlake High from 1992-94, has been replaced by Rob Paules.

Benkert, the school’s head football coach since 1989, might continue as an track assistant this season, but said he no longer had the “time and energy to be a head coach in both sports anymore.”

Paules is the Westlake cross-country coach.
