Marquis Burns, a 6-foot-4 guard who announced Jan. 14 he was leaving UCLA, has transferred to New Mexico State.

Burns will be eligible to play for the Aggies at the end of the fall semester next December.

A native of Reseda, Burns complained about his playing time at UCLA. He averaged nine points, three assists, two blocks and 1.6 rebounds per game for the Bruins in five games earlier this season before injuring his back before Christmas.

“If I was the type of player who was just happy to have the scholarship, it wouldn’t have bugged me,” Burns said. “But I believe I have talent and should play more.”

New Mexico State spokesman Steve Shutt said the school will ask NCAA officials to give Burns a medical redshirt season because of the injury. If granted, Burns will have two years of eligibility with the Aggies. Without it, he will be a senior next season.
