Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has been honored by a UCLA student group with its first Humanitarian of the Year award.

The award was presented during an outdoor ceremony that marked the 30th anniversary of the student-run Community Service Commission.

Yaroslavsky launched his political career while a student at UCLA in the 1970s, when he fought for the rights of Jews in Communist Russia. He went on to win election to the Los Angeles City Council, where he served until becoming a county supervisor last year.

“He’s an (alumnus) and a county supervisor, so we think the award is appropriate,” said Saru Jayaraman, a commissioner on the UCLA Student Service Commission.
