LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Information Campaign Is Aimed at Latinos
Seeking to improve the living standard of Los Angeles County’s burgeoning Latino population, a coalition of businesses and community leaders announced the kickoff Thursday of a two-year public information campaign to educate Spanish-speaking families on such topics as preventive health care, family finances and educational opportunities.
The program, La Familia Si Puede (Families Really Can), will include public service announcements, speaking engagements and the distribution of hundreds of thousands of brochures, said Jose Lozano, La Opinion newspaper publisher.
Although the program comes in the wake of the overwhelming passage of Proposition 187, the anti-illegal immigration initiative that many Latinos believe was targeted at them, it is not primarily political in nature, Lozano said.
Efforts to upgrade the lives of Latino families will help them “truly take control of (their) own destiny,” said Antonia Hernandez, president of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and a member of the new program’s advisory board.
